On the highway, the Spectra can get up to 32mpg and it can get up to 24mpg in the city. The Kia Spectra also gets relatively good gas mileage, adding to the idea of using it as a commuter car. Owners brag about the low cost of repairing the Spectras, and most people claim that they haven’t had to do any major, expensive repairs as long as general maintenance schedules are followed. Maintenance for the Kia Spectra is simple, and because it doesn’t have as many complications as newer cars and some luxury brands, they can be worked on by almost any mechanics. They are known for the reliability and with just general maintenance can reportedly last over 200,000 miles. It’s a basic car that puts simplicity at the forefront of its design. The Kia Spectra doesn’t have a backup camera, touch screen infotainment system, or any of the neat technology safety features of the new Kia sedans. They lack a lot of the modern features that you want from a car. You can purchase a Kia Spectra for less than $10,000 which is a pretty good deal for a reliable car. Regardless, the Spectra is pretty cool for an older car. Cars manufactured after January 2005 are equipped with the new airbag design. In response, Kia reduced the size of the driver airbag vent holes to lessen the injury forces occurring on the head and neck. This rating, along with acceptable or marginal ratings for the chest and both legs, contributed to a poor overall rating. Forces on the head and neck were high, leading to a marginal head/neck injury rating. The Institute evaluated a 2004 Spectra manufactured after November 2003. (Information about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification label typically affixed to the car on the driver door or adjacent B-pillar.) (The old design was produced through November 2003 these cars are also designated as 2004 models.) All 2004 and later Spectra models manufactured after November 2003 are the redesigned cars.
